As we work our way out of Florida, we spent several days in Destin. Situated on the Gulf Coast, Destin is a fun beach town with some quirky attractions including the oldest surviving “Goofy Golf” course (more than 50 years old).
Also found in Destin, is the Double Decker Bus of Mannequins. Definitely odd, and a bit creepy, this bus serves as a parking lot sign for McGuire’s Irish Pub.
The beach in Destin is beautiful, as most Florida beaches are. The fine white sand shimmers, even on a chilly, windy day. This part of Florida definitely gets colder than south Florida. Still, very nice.
A short drive from Destin, is Seaside – the quaint beach town where “The Truman Show” with Jim Carrey was filmed on location. When watching the movie, you’d think the storybook cottages, airy porches, and white picket fences were a Hollywood backlot creation, but you’d be wrong. The real-life town is just as charming as pictured in the movie.
We found the house that was Truman Burbank’s in the movie. It’s changed a bit, but the owners kept the number 36 from the filming even though their actual street number is 31.
